How do we begin to describe the fly-fishing at Osprey Lake Lodge, where the
average brook trout caught & released weighs five lbs., eight ounces? Osprey
Lake is described by Labrador Fish & Game Officials as "the best pure brook
trout fishery in Labrador." In 2004, five brook trout were caught weighing
over 10 lbs!
On our last visit to Osprey Lake Lodge, Lila and I found the fishing to be, in
one word, phenomenal! This is a dry fly fisherman’s paradise! We landed, by
actual count, in 4 ˝ days fishing, fifty-five trout. What is most notable about
that figure is that four of those fish were less than four pounds. Of the
remaining fifty-one, fifteen were less than five pounds and the remaining
thirty-six ranged from just over five pounds to seven and a half pounds! Lila
hooked and lost a trout that the guide believed was well in excess of nine
pounds! Thank goodness for small wonders or she'd have out fished me again (not
an unusual occurrence!)
The meals are hearty, home-cooked and all you can eat. The accommodations are
lovely and offer all modern amenities, including a screened-in porch & hot
showers! Your guides are English-speaking, Labrador natives who have years of
experience on this watershed and like most guides, just simply great guys who
love to watch people land the biggest trout that they've ever seen! They also
delight in listening to your voice rise with excitement as you babble about the
trout that you just missed! Floatplane service to the Lodge is from Goose Bay
and an overnight there is required. These reservations are made for you and
Lodge representatives will be waiting at the airport to provide all necessary
local transportation for meals, lodging, flights and shopping, time allowing.
In summary, Osprey Lake Lodge is absolutely a once-in-a--lifetime experience
that all brook trout aficionados should allow themselves to enjoy. As always,
